Dr. Aaron Shaw
Clinical Psychologist
DClinPsy, CPsychol, MSc, BSc (Hons), PGDip
Sometimes it can be difficult to understand why you are feeling the way you do, particularly when anxiety, low mood, stress or difficult experiences begin to affect everyday life.
At Aaron Shaw Psychology, I provide psychological therapy for adults as an HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist, supporting people experiencing a range of emotional and psychological difficulties.
My approach is warm, collaborative and evidence-informed. Rather than simply focusing on symptoms, we work together to understand what may be contributing to the difficulties you are experiencing, what may be keeping them going, and what could help you move forward.
Face-to-face appointments are available on weekday evenings in Bristol and on Saturdays in Cheltenham. Online appointments are also available across the UK.
How I Can Help
People come to therapy for many different reasons. You may have been struggling for some time, or something may have happened recently that has made life more difficult.
I provide psychological therapy and support for difficulties including:
-
Anxiety and excessive worry
-
Trauma and difficult life experiences
-
Depression and low mood
-
Burnout and chronic stress
-
Low self-esteem and self-criticism
-
Relationship and interpersonal difficulties
-
Dementia and support for family carers
-
Cognitive and neuropsychological difficulties
You do not need to know exactly what kind of therapy you need before getting in touch. Part of my role is to help make sense of what is happening and think with you about the most appropriate way forward.
A Psychological Approach Tailored to You
Clinical psychology is not based on applying the same technique to everyone.
I take time to understand your experiences in the context of your life, relationships, strengths and circumstances. Together, we develop a psychological understanding - often called a formulation - of the difficulties you are facing.
This helps us decide what might be most useful rather than beginning with a predetermined approach.
Depending on your needs, therapy may draw upon evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), systemic approaches and other psychological models.
The aim is not simply to reduce symptoms, but to help you develop a better understanding of yourself and make meaningful, sustainable changes in your life.
Why Work With a Clinical Psychologist?
I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Clinical psychologists undertake doctoral-level training in psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based psychological therapy. This allows me to draw upon different psychological approaches and adapt therapy to the individual rather than being restricted to a single model.
My clinical experience spans mental health, neuropsychology, physical health and dementia, including work with people experiencing complex or long-standing difficulties.

Taking the First Step
You don't need to have everything worked out before contacting a psychologist.
If you are considering therapy and would like to find out whether I might be the right person to support you, you are welcome to arrange a free 15-minute enquiry call.
This gives us an opportunity to briefly discuss what has brought you to therapy, what you are looking for, and whether working together feels appropriate.
